Free English (ESL) & Citizenship Classes in San Antonio (2026)

Better English opens better doors — and in San Antonio, the classes are free

A better job, a promotion, helping your kids with homework, passing the citizenship interview — so much in America runs through English. What stops most adults is not motivation; it is cost and time. Here is the good news: San Antonio has multiple programs offering completely free English (ESL) classes for adults, with daytime, evening, in-person, and online options. Several also offer free U.S. citizenship preparation classes.

This guide lists where to enroll, what each program requires, and how to pick the right fit.

Alamo Adult Education: free ESL, GED & career training

Alamo Adult Education (run through the Alamo Colleges District) offers free English-as-a-Second-Language classes alongside high school equivalency (GED) prep and career training — at multiple locations across San Antonio plus online.

What you get: individualized education and career planning, academic assessments, support throughout training, vouchers for certification exams, and career/employment assistance. Courses run year-round.

Requirements: 18 or older, a valid photo ID, and no associate degree or higher. You will take assessments covering academics, skills, and workplace readiness — and attendance is taken seriously, because showing up is how you succeed.

San Antonio residents with household income under 250% of the federal poverty guidelines may also qualify for extra funding support through the city’s Ready to Work program.

Southwest ISD: free ESL + citizenship classes

Southwest ISD Community Education offers free ESL and U.S. citizenship preparation classes for adults — in person, virtual, and online, with daytime and evening schedules, open to the public.

Requirements: 19 or older with valid government-issued ID, plus registration and orientation. (Students 17–18 should contact the office before registering.)

Citizenship classes cover what the naturalization interview actually tests: English reading, writing, and speaking, plus the civics questions on American history and government. If you are preparing for your interview, this is exactly the class you want.

NISD Adult Education: free ESL from beginner to professional

Northside ISD Adult Education, funded by the Texas Workforce Commission, offers free ESL classes from beginner all the way to professional levels, plus GED prep and Integrated Education and Training (IET) that pairs English learning with career skills.

The program is designed around one goal: the skills to succeed in the workforce, earn a high school equivalency, or enter college or career training. Enrollment is handled online through their registration system.

Family Service Neighborhood Place: ESL + GED on the West Side

Family Service Association’s Neighborhood Place at 3014 Rivas St, San Antonio, TX offers GED and ESL classes along with a financial empowerment center, utility assistance, counseling, and a computer lab — a one-stop shop if English class is one of several things your family needs. Call (210) 431-7500 for schedules. Open Monday–Friday 8–5 and Saturday 9–2.
