San Antonio is Military City USA — and veterans here have access to some of the best free counseling in the country. The key thing most vets don’t know: VA Vet Centers provide free confidential counseling with no VA healthcare enrollment required. You don’t need a disability rating, you don’t need to be registered with the VA. Walk in or call.

FAQ
Do I need to be enrolled in VA healthcare to use a Vet Center? No. Vet Centers operate separately from VA medical centers. No enrollment, no disability rating, and no other VA benefits are required.
Is Vet Center counseling really free? Yes — cost is listed as free, with no copays.
What if I’m a family member of a veteran? Vet Centers provide counseling for service members’ families too, including bereavement counseling for families who lost a service member.
I’m not in crisis but things aren’t great. Is that enough reason to call? Absolutely. Vet Centers handle readjustment challenges, stress, relationship strain — not just crises. Early is better.
