Moving into a new place with empty rooms happens more often in San Antonio than people talk about. Maybe you just signed a lease, maybe you’re starting over, or maybe the kids are still sleeping on an air mattress. Furnishing even a small apartment — beds, a couch, a kitchen table — can easily cost more than a month’s rent.
That’s where local charities step in. Several San Antonio organizations give free furniture to people who qualify, and getting help costs nothing: applying is free, and the furniture itself is provided at no charge. Below are the programs worth calling first, plus what to expect when you reach out.

How to apply
- Pick one or two programs from the list above — start with the one closest to you, or the one that fits your situation. The Furniture Bank, for example, focuses on families moving out of homelessness.
- Call the number listed and briefly explain what you need: a bed, a couch, a dining table. Ask whether they have those items right now or run a waiting list. On every call, ask three quick questions: Do I need a referral or can I apply directly? What furniture do you currently have? And do you deliver, or do I need my own transportation? That last one matters — a free couch isn’t free if you can’t get it home.
- Ask what paperwork to bring. Requirements vary by organization, so confirm before you visit. A photo ID and proof of address or income are commonly requested.

What to expect
Most of these programs run on donations, so you usually can’t pick exact styles or colors — but beds, tables, and couches in usable condition are common. Ask when you call whether the program offers pickup or delivery; some do, and some ask you to arrange your own transport. If one program can’t help right away, work down the list instead of waiting on a single callback.

Is the furniture really free?
Yes. The organizations listed above provide furniture at no charge to people who qualify. The only thing you might need to arrange is getting the items home, depending on the program.
Who qualifies for free furniture?
Each organization sets its own rules, but they generally help low-income individuals and families, people moving out of homelessness, and families facing difficult circumstances. Call the program directly — they’ll tell you within a few minutes whether you qualify.
How do I apply?
Call the phone number for the program you want, or use the application link on our Free Furniture Assistance Programs page. You can also use our free Apply for Me service and we’ll help you get started.
What documents do I need?
It varies by organization. Commonly requested items include a photo ID and proof of address or income — but confirm with the program before you go, so you don’t make a wasted trip.
What if I just need one item, like a bed or a couch?
That’s completely normal — most people come in needing one or two key pieces, especially beds and mattresses. Tell the program exactly what you need when you call so they can tell you whether they have it in stock right now or when to check back.
