Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026 — and in San Antonio, nobody has to spend it hungry or alone. This city hosts one of the largest free Thanksgiving dinners in the country, plus turkey giveaways, food bank distributions, and meal delivery for folks who can’t get out of the house.
Here is every real option we could verify for 2026, with the dates, places, and phone numbers that matter. The dinners and food help below are free. A couple of the giveaways need registration, and one popular one has already filled up — we tell you plainly which is which so you don’t waste a trip.
1. The big one: Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner (Thanksgiving Day)
The 47th Annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner takes place on Thursday, November 26, 2026, in Exhibit Halls A and B of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center downtown. It started in 1979, when restaurant owner Raul Jimenez set out to feed San Antonio seniors who would otherwise eat alone. It now serves more than 25,000 people in a single day.
- Doors open at 9:00 a.m. — guests enter the Convention Center from Alamo Street
- An all-faith worship service is held at 10:00 a.m. (optional)
- Dinner is served from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with live music through the afternoon
- Who can come: anyone. The dinner was built for seniors, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and families having a hard year — but the doors are open to the whole community, and in-person guests do not register ahead of time
Just show up hungry. You will get a full Thanksgiving plate — turkey, dressing, sides, and dessert — served by volunteers at a real table, not handed through a car window. If you want the official details or you’d like to volunteer, see rauljimenezdinner.com and the United Way’s event page. Volunteer registration opens in late October 2026.
2. Can’t leave home? Get a Thanksgiving meal delivered
If you are home-bound — a senior, someone recovering from surgery, or anyone who physically can’t get downtown — the Jimenez dinner team also delivers meals to homes on Thanksgiving Day, with help from United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County.
To register for delivery, call 2-1-1. That’s it — dial 211, tell them you want to register for Thanksgiving Day meal delivery for a home-bound person, and they will take it from there. Call early: delivery slots are arranged in the days before Thanksgiving, not on the morning of. If 211 doesn’t connect from your phone, use the statewide number, 877-541-7905. Our step-by-step guide to how 2-1-1 Texas works in San Antonio explains what they will ask.
3. Turkey giveaway: Rivers of Hope (Nov 21) — registration already full
Rivers of Hope Ministries holds its 7th Annual Thanksgiving Giveaway on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Medical Center Church, 7015 Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78240. Registered households receive a turkey — or a voucher for a turkey or ham — plus the traditional sides to cook a holiday meal at home. One basket per household.
The honest catch: registration was required, and it is already at capacity. If you registered, bring your registration confirmation on the day for faster check-in, and watch for the pickup instructions the ministry sends registered households. If you didn’t get a spot, please don’t show up expecting a basket — call the Food Bank or 211 below instead, because other distributions still have room. Questions: 210-693-0124.
4. Need the fixings instead? The San Antonio Food Bank
If you’d rather cook at home, the San Antonio Food Bank runs food distributions all over the city every week — including the week of Thanksgiving — through its market distributions, on-site curbside program, and partner pantries. There is no special Thanksgiving-only line to stand in; you use the same system, and the earlier in November you go, the less rushed it is.
- Find a distribution near you: safoodbank.org/help — search by ZIP code
- Client Services phone: 210-431-8326 (Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–3 p.m.)
- Main campus: 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90, San Antonio, TX 78227
- Some distributions ask for pre-registration and send a confirmation code — if you don’t get a code, that event is full and you should pick another one
The same team can also screen you for SNAP food benefits and help you apply, free — worth doing while you’re there, since SNAP stretches your grocery budget long after Thanksgiving. And if you’re feeding little ones, our guide to free WIC in San Antonio covers the extra grocery package for pregnant moms and kids under 5.
5. Seniors: more than one day of meals
Thanksgiving Day is covered above, but if you are 60 or older, San Antonio’s senior centers serve free weekday lunches all year, and home-delivered meals exist for seniors who qualify. Our full guide to free meals for seniors in San Antonio lists the centers and how to sign up. It takes one phone call to get on the list — November is a fine time to make it, before the December holidays hit.

Questions people ask
Do I need to sign up to eat at the Raul Jimenez dinner?
No. In-person guests just show up — doors open at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and dinner is served from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The only sign-up is for home-bound meal delivery, and that is done by calling 211.
Can someone bring a Thanksgiving meal to my house?
Yes, if you are home-bound. The Jimenez dinner and United Way arrange Thanksgiving Day deliveries — register ahead of time by calling 211 (or 877-541-7905). Register early in November; routes are planned before the holiday.
Is the Rivers of Hope turkey giveaway still open?
Registration filled up and closed (it was set to close October 15, 2026 or when spots filled). Registered households pick up on Saturday, November 21, 2026, 10:00–11:00 a.m. at Medical Center Church, 7015 Wurzbach Rd. If you missed it, the Food Bank (210-431-8326) and 211 can point you to distributions that still have room.
Where can I get a free turkey to cook at home?
Your best bet is a San Antonio Food Bank distribution in November — find one at safoodbank.org/help or call 210-431-8326. Holiday turkey giveaways around the city fill fast and change year to year, so calling 211 in early November gets you the current list for your ZIP code.
