Free Meals for Seniors in San Antonio (2026): Senior Centers, Home Delivery & How to Sign Up

If you are 60 or older in San Antonio, you do not have to stretch a grocery budget alone — or skip lunch because cooking has gotten hard. The city and local nonprofits run free meal programs every weekday: hot lunches served at senior centers across town, and home-delivered meals for neighbors who cannot get out or cook for themselves.

This guide walks through both options, who they are for, and exactly who to call to get started. Help applying and guidance are free. Eligibility is checked by each program when you call — nothing here is automatic, and this site does not submit applications for you.

Free weekday lunches at San Antonio senior centers

The City of San Antonio’s Healthy Eating, Aging and Living (HEAL) program serves congregate meals — hot lunches eaten together at a center — to older adults ages 60 and older living in San Antonio and Bexar County. The program has provided weekday hot meals at senior centers and nutrition sites throughout the community for decades, funded through the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG).

Lunch at a center is about more than food. Most centers also offer exercise classes, games like bingo and lotería, health screenings, arts classes, and field trips. Many regulars will tell you the company is the best part.

How to start: Pick a center near you below, call ahead, and ask about lunch registration and what time lunch is served that day. Staff will explain any simple sign-up step for first-time guests. If you need a ride, ask — several comprehensive centers offer transportation to and from the center for eligible seniors living within a 5-mile radius.

Examples of city senior centers that serve a daily lunch

Opened in 2010, this 13,500-square-foot center offers a daily lunchtime meal, transportation within a 5-mile radius for eligible seniors, exercise, dance, drawing and painting classes, and a walking group. Hours listed by the city: Monday–Thursday 7 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m.

Southside Lions Senior Center — 3303 Pecan Valley Dr, San Antonio, TX — 210-207-1760. A comprehensive center serving daily lunchtime meals, with transportation within five miles and low-impact exercise including chair yoga.

West End Park Senior Center — 1226 NW 18th St, San Antonio, TX — 210-207-1720. Offers senior center programs including health screenings and social activities alongside the weekday meal program.

These are just three examples — there are senior centers and nutrition sites in neighborhoods across San Antonio. If none of these is close to you, call 2-1-1 or the Bexar Area Agency on Aging (numbers below) and ask for the meal site nearest your ZIP code.

Can’t get out? Free home-delivered meals

If leaving home or standing in a kitchen is the problem, home delivery may fit better.

Meals on Wheels San Antonio delivers nutritious lunchtime meals in Bexar County and surrounding areas, and can also provide packages of breakfast food items and specially made frozen meals for extra nutrition outside lunchtime, including weekends. According to Meals on Wheels San Antonio, they do not have strict qualifications, but they generally serve clients who:

  • Are unable to make their own meals
  • Are homebound
  • Are not able to drive

To apply or refer a loved one: Call 210-735-5115 and ask for the Client Services department. They will talk through whether you may qualify and what happens next. Meals on Wheels clients can also ask about AniMeals (pet food delivery, because many seniors were sharing their meals with their pets), Friendly Visitor companionship, and Comfy Casas home-safety help.

The city’s food assistance information also notes that, on a limited basis, disabled individuals under 60 may be eligible for home-delivered meals if funding is available — it is always worth a call to ask.

One call that connects you to everything else

Bexar Area Agency on Aging (part of AACOG) — Call 210-477-3275 for Bexar County (or 866-231-4922 for the wider Alamo area). The agency helps with information and referral, benefits counseling for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, care coordination, caregiver support, transportation coordination, and hot lunches and home-delivered meals in coordination with community partners. AACOG states its Area Agency on Aging services are provided at no charge.
