It may feel early, but Christmas help in San Antonio works on fall deadlines — the biggest toy programs open registration in October and fill up fast. If your family could use help with gifts this year, here is what is open right now, what opens soon, and the dates you cannot miss.
Open now: Salvation Army Angel Tree
Angel Tree registration opened October 2, 2026. Families register a child, and community donors “adopt” that child’s angel tag and buy the gifts on their list. Spots go quickly every year — if this is the program you count on, register as early as you can through the Salvation Army San Antonio. Bring proof of address, identification, and information for each child when you register.
Open now: USPS Operation Santa letters
Children can write a letter to Santa through the U.S. Postal Service’s Operation Santa — letters opened September 14, 2026, and letters must be postmarked by December 5, 2026. Letters are posted (with personal details removed) for adopters to read and fulfill. Gift adopters can start choosing letters on November 16, through December 12. Full instructions are at USPSOperationSanta.com. A clear letter that lists sizes, needs first, and a wish or two gives adopters the best chance to help.
SAPD Blue Santa: donations open, family signups not announced yet
San Antonio Police Department’s Blue Santa program is collecting toy and gift donations from October 1 through November 20, 2026. The dates for family applications have not been announced yet. We check the official sources and will update this page the moment the family signup window opens — the deadline-alert signup on our benefits calendar is the surest way not to miss it.
Elf Louise: ask for a referral
The Elf Louise Christmas Project delivers gifts to children referred by schools, churches, and social service agencies — families cannot sign up directly. If your child could use it, ask your school counselor or a caseworker now, while referral lists are still being built.
Save the date: Noche Buena, December 5
Noche Buena is a free community holiday celebration planned for Saturday, December 5, 2026 — food, music, and holiday help for families. Details land on our free events calendar as organizers confirm them.
While you wait: Thanksgiving help comes first
Christmas signups run on paperwork; Thanksgiving runs on appetite. Our guide to free Thanksgiving meals in San Antonio lists the big dinners and giveaways, including registration notes. And if money is tight beyond the holidays, take the free 2-minute benefits checker — many families qualify for food, utility, and cash help they have never been told about.
