The formula can is almost empty, payday is days away, and a can costs more than a tank of gas. If that is your kitchen table right now, you are not out of options in San Antonio — there are real, free routes to formula this week, and the biggest one helps far more families than most people realize. Here they are, verified against the programs’ own pages in October 2026.
1. Texas WIC — the main road to free formula
WIC is built for exactly this. For mothers who don’t fully breastfeed, WIC provides iron-fortified infant formula as part of the monthly food package — for fully formula-fed babies, federal package amounts run up to roughly 806–884 ounces a month in the first six months, tailored to your baby’s needs. WIC is honest that families may still need to buy some formula on their own — but it covers the large share.
Who qualifies: pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5 who live in Texas. The income limit is 185% of the federal poverty line — a household of four can earn up to $5,088 a month gross. And if your family already gets Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, you already meet WIC’s income test and your application moves faster.
How to start today: apply online at texaswic.org (a few minutes; your local WIC office then calls you to set the first appointment) or call 800-942-3678. Bring proof of address, income, and ID to the appointment. If you have trouble using your WIC card at a store, that same number is the help line.
Already past the newborn stage? See our full WIC in San Antonio guide for everything the package covers through age 5.
2. Need help signing up — or food tonight? The Food Bank does both
The San Antonio Food Bank’s Benefits Assistance team will screen you and help you apply for WIC (and SNAP, Medicaid/CHIP, and TANF) — free, in person at 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90 or by phone at 210-431-8326 (Mon–Fri 8–6, Sat 9–3). And for food tonight, its markets, curbside pickups, and partner pantries run across the city — find one by ZIP on the Get Help page at safoodbank.org or at that same number. One honest note: the Food Bank’s distributions are general food, not a formula counter — call and ask what baby items a given distribution has, and let its team fast-track the WIC application that solves the problem every month.
3. For the baby’s other essentials: Texas Diaper Bank
The Diaper Bank’s Parenting Essentials Program gives enrolled families free diapers and baby essentials every quarter — for children 0–36 months in households at or below 200% of the poverty line (Bexar County included). It is diapers and essentials, not formula — but every diaper you don’t buy is formula money freed up. Enroll online at texasdiaperbank.org (bring a photo ID, proof of guardianship like a birth certificate, and an income self-declaration); distributions are by enrollment, not walk-in. 210-731-8118, 1803 Grandstand Dr., #150. 4. Pregnancy centers that hand clients formula and supplies
- Allied Women’s Center (102 Marshall St.) helps its clients with formula, diapers, wipes, and baby clothes. Call first: (210) 224-7077.
- St. Stephen’s CARE Center (Catholic Charities, 2127 S. Zarzamora St.) is a shop-for-free food pantry where diapers are also available for clients — food plus diapers in one trip, Mon–Fri 9–4. Info line: (210) 226-6178.
5. Still short? Call 2-1-1
Dial 2-1-1 or 877-541-7905 — free and confidential, 24/7. 2-1-1 Texas keeps the current list of church pantries, baby closets, and emergency assistance near your ZIP, including the ones too small to have websites. And our free food listings cover the pantries that stock baby items alongside groceries.
