The holidays in San Antonio don’t have to cost a thing. From 200,000 lights glittering over the River Walk to a half-mile field of synchronized lights on the West Side, the city’s best Christmas displays are free — you just need to know where and when. Here are the free holiday lights and events worth your gas money this season, with dates, addresses, and how to see them without spending a dime.
River Walk Holiday Lights — Free Every Night, Nov 27 Through Early January
The San Antonio River Walk is the city’s signature Christmas sight: more than 200,000 lights draped over the bald cypress trees along the downtown stretch, glowing from sundown to sunrise every night from November 27 through early January. The River Walk is a public park, so strolling under the lights is completely free.
The lights switch on during the 45th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade on Friday, November 27, 2026 — the parade and lighting ceremony start at 6:00 PM at the Tobin Center. Reserved seats cost money, but there is a free viewing area on the east side of the River Walk between Pecan Street and Richmond Avenue: bring your own chair, arrive early, first-come first-served. Insider tip: skip opening night and come a week or two later on a weeknight — same lights, a fraction of the crowd.
Noche Buena at Main Plaza — Saturday, December 5, 3–9 PM (Free)
The 16th Annual Noche Buena takes over Main Plaza, 115 N Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205 on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 3:00 to 9:00 PM — and it’s free and open to the public. Expect a Christmas market with local vendors, live music and entertainment all evening, visits with Santa (4:00–8:00 PM), sweet treats and warm drinks, and the H-E-B tree lighting at 6:30 PM. Details at mainplaza.org.
UIW Light the Way — Saturday, November 21 (Free Festival + Fireworks)
The University of the Incarnate Word’s 40th Annual Light the Way Holiday Festival, presented by H-E-B, happens Saturday, November 21 at 4301 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209. It’s the official first lighting of the university’s famous Christmas display — a full evening of family fun ending with a fireworks finale. The festival is free; see uiw.edu/lighttheway for times and details.
Westover Field of Lights — Dec 3–19, Thu–Sun Evenings (Free)
Walk through a field of 400,000+ synchronized lights at the Westover Sports Complex, 9340 Westover Hills Blvd, on Thursday through Sunday evenings, December 3–19, 2026. Admission is free — stroll half a mile of shimmering displays, enjoy free games and photo ops, and bring a non-perishable food item or unwrapped toy if you can: the event supports the San Antonio Food Bank, Gabriella’s Smile Foundation, and Bill’s Elves Toy Drive. Timed tickets may be required — check westoverlights.com before you go, where tickets are listed as coming soon.
Free Viewing Tips
- Go on weeknights. Opening nights and Saturdays draw the biggest crowds; a Tuesday evening gives you the same lights with room to breathe.
- Bring a chair for the parade. The River Walk parade’s free viewing area is first-come, first-served — early arrival is everything.
- Pack snacks and cocoa. The displays are free; the food vendors aren’t. A thermos of hot chocolate keeps the night cheap and cozy.
- Check before you go. Dates and times can shift with weather — a quick check of the event’s official site the day of saves a wasted trip.
