If you or your teenager has been putting off college applications because each one costs money, this is the week to stop waiting. Texas Free College Application Week runs October 12–18, 2026, and Texas residents can apply to undergraduate programs at public colleges and universities in Texas with no application fee — as long as the application is submitted through ApplyTexas by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 18.
That deadline is close. Starting an application is not enough — it has to be submitted before the cutoff to get the fee waived.
What is free — and what is not
The waiver covers the application fee for undergraduate admission at Texas public colleges and universities when you apply through ApplyTexas during this week. It does not cover tuition, books, housing, or other college costs, and it does not generally cover graduate program applications. Think of it as the state removing the first bill so more families actually apply.
There is no income limit for this week. Eligibility is about Texas residency and applying to an undergraduate program at a public school through ApplyTexas. Each college decides residency based on state rules, and a school may still ask for transcripts or other documents after you submit.
San Antonio schools you can apply to
For San Antonio families, the public options close to home include:
- Alamo Colleges District — San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College, and Northeast Lakeview College
- UT San Antonio (UTSA)
- Texas A&M University–San Antonio
You are not limited to San Antonio. The same waiver applies to public colleges and universities across Texas when you use ApplyTexas this week. Last year, more than 260,000 applications were submitted during Free College Application Week statewide, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Who can use this
- Texas residents applying for undergraduate admission
- First-time college students, including high school seniors
- Transfer students
- Adults returning to school for an undergraduate program
You do not have to be a high school senior to use it.
How to apply free — step by step
- Go to ApplyTexas at applytexas.org and create an account. Use an email you will still check after graduation — a personal email is safer than a school email you may lose.
- Answer the core questions once. ApplyTexas lets you reuse common answers for multiple schools, then finish each school’s own questions or essay.
- Pick your schools and the term you want to start. Apply to more than one if you are unsure — this week, each qualifying application fee is waived.
- Submit — do not just save — before 11:59 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2026. A saved draft does not count.
- Watch your email for each college’s next steps on transcripts, test scores if required, and financial aid.
After you apply: do not skip financial aid
An application gets you considered for admission. Financial aid is a separate step that can lower what you actually pay. If you have not done it yet, read our guide to free FAFSA help in San Antonio, and browse the educational benefits and assistance programs that San Antonio students may qualify for. If college is part of a job change, our free job training programs in San Antonio guide is worth a look too.
Check what you may qualify for
College is one piece. Many San Antonio households also may qualify for food, utility, health, or childcare help they have not claimed yet. Our free Apply for Me service checks your situation against local assistance programs and emails you a personal guide with your potential matches. It does not submit government applications for you — it shows you what you may qualify for and where to apply.
