Free School Supplies in San Antonio (2026): Where to Get Them All Year

It’s October. The backpack giveaways ended in August, your child’s pencils are stubs, the notebooks are full — and the supply list just came home again. Here’s the thing most families never hear: the free school supplies didn’t disappear. They moved into the schools themselves, and most of them are available all school year. This guide shows where they are in San Antonio right now.

1. Ask at your child’s school — Communities In Schools keeps campuses stocked all year

Communities In Schools of San Antonio runs the big Stuff The Bus drive every summer — and in its own FAQ it says the supplies are delivered to its partner schools (more than 140 schools across 12 districts) so students can get them “not only at the start of the school year but throughout the school year.” Any student in need at a partner campus can receive supplies; your child does not have to be enrolled in a CIS program. Start at the front office and ask for the CIS site coordinator or your child’s counselor. That’s the whole application.

2. Every district: the campus counselor is the door

Northside ISD tells families directly on its site: “If you need assistance with school supplies, contact your campus counselors.” The same advice works in SAISD, North East, Harlandale, and every other Bexar County district — counselors and campus social workers keep supplies and basic-needs referrals for exactly this moment, including free clothing closets like Northside Threads (by counselor referral) and school food pantries. You don’t need an appointment or a special reason. A two-minute ask at drop-off is enough.

3. No stable housing? You have a legal right to supplies — all year

If your family is doubled up with relatives, in a motel or shelter, or in a car, the federal McKinney-Vento Act gives your child the right to help with school supplies, immediate enrollment even without records, free school meals, and transportation help. Every district has a homeless liaison. Ask the school office to connect you — this is a legal right, and it has no August deadline.

4. SA YES schools: every student already got a kit

The SA YES (TEXAS YES Project) Box of Dreams program picks Title 1 elementary schools and gives every student in the school a free supply kit — in the most recent San Antonio round, 30,000 kits went to schools in Harlandale, Edgewood, San Antonio, South San, and Southwest ISDs. The kits arrive at the start of the year, so mid-year the move is simple: ask your child’s teacher or front office about replacements from the school’s supply. If your school is a SA YES school, supplies are part of how it runs.

5. Your library card is a free school kit of a different kind

The San Antonio Public Library won’t hand you pencils — but with a free library card (any branch, with proof of Bexar County residency and a photo ID) you get the expensive half of homework free, all year:

  • Free Wi-Fi hotspots to take home — 21-day checkout for cardholders at 10 branches (Bazan, Collins Garden, Cortez, Forest Hills, Las Palmas, Memorial, Mission, Pan American, Schaefer, Westfall).
  • Free live online tutoring (Brainfuse HelpNow) for kindergarten through college, in English and Spanish — check mysapl.org for current daily hours.
  • Free test prep for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and AP exams through LearningExpress Library.
  • Questions? Ask a Librarian: 210-207-2500.

6. Teachers: the SAISD Foundation Teacher Store is open right now

Not a parent route — but worth telling your child’s teacher about. The SAISD Foundation’s free Teacher Store gives SAISD teachers classroom supplies at no cost, and its pilot season runs October through March, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3:00–6:00 p.m. at Young Men’s Leadership Academy (415 Gabriel). If the classroom is short, the teacher can stock up free — and families can donate materials any time.

Still stuck? Call 2-1-1

Dial 2-1-1 (or 877-541-7905) any time — it’s free, confidential, 24/7, in English and Spanish, and run locally by United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Specialists can point you to whichever church, charity, or campus program near your ZIP still has supplies this week.

While you’re solving school costs, these may help too: free clothes and uniforms, free food programs, and free diapers for younger siblings.
