Free TSAP Food Benefits in Texas (2026): Simpler SNAP for San Antonio Seniors 60+

If you are 60 or older in San Antonio — or you live with a disability — Texas has a simpler version of SNAP food benefits that many people never hear about. It is called TSAP, short for the Texas Simplified Application Project, and it was built for households like yours: a shorter application, and once you are approved, your benefits are certified for three years instead of the usual six months.

That three-year certification is the big deal. Regular SNAP asks most households to renew every six months, and seniors lose benefits all the time simply because a renewal form got lost, confusing, or late. Under TSAP, you apply once and — if you stay eligible — you do not have to sit for an interview when it is time to renew. Applying is free, and the help checking your eligibility is free too.

How TSAP is different from regular SNAP

  • Shorter application. The TSAP form is simpler than the regular SNAP application.
  • Three-year certification. TSAP households are certified for three years, compared with six months for regular SNAP.
  • No renewal interview. If you are eligible, you do not have to do an interview when it is time to renew.
  • Same grocery help. TSAP is still SNAP — benefits are based on your income and household size and are loaded onto a Lone Star Card you use at the grocery store.

Who qualifies for TSAP in Texas?

To be eligible, your household has to meet all of these, according to Texas Health and Human Services:

  • Everyone in your household (the people you live with and buy and prepare food with) is age 60 or older, receives disability payments at any age, or a mix of both.
  • No one in the household has earned income — that means income from working.
  • No one in the household receives benefits under SNAP-CAP (the SNAP-Combined Application Project).

So a retired couple living on Social Security and a pension can be a classic TSAP household. A senior living with a working adult child usually is not, because of the earned-income rule — but that household may still qualify for regular SNAP, so it is always worth checking both.

Already getting SNAP? You may be moved to TSAP automatically

If you already receive SNAP, you do not need a separate TSAP application just to be considered. When you renew your benefits, Texas Health and Human Services will automatically check whether you are eligible for TSAP. If the simpler program fits, that three-year certification can start at your renewal — one more reason not to let a renewal deadline slip by. Frequently asked questions

Is TSAP a different benefit from SNAP?

No. TSAP is a simpler way to get and keep SNAP food benefits. The benefit amount is still based on income and household size — what changes is the shorter application, the three-year certification, and no interview at renewal if you are eligible.

I still work part-time. Can I get TSAP?

Probably not — TSAP households can have no earned income from working. But part-time work does not rule out regular SNAP, so apply and let Texas HHS check both. You may qualify for regular SNAP even if TSAP does not fit.

How long does TSAP approval last?

TSAP recipients are certified for three years, compared with six months for regular SNAP. If you are eligible, you also skip the interview when it is time to renew.

Does it cost anything to apply?

No. Applying for TSAP or SNAP is free, and so is the application help from the San Antonio Food Bank and 2-1-1. Never pay anyone who promises to “sell” you food benefits.
