A YMCA membership can feel out of reach when money is tight. In San Antonio, the YMCA of Greater San Antonio runs a program built for that exact problem.
It is called Open Doors. Through Open Doors, families, children and adults can apply for financial help toward YMCA membership and other Y services. Help applying and guidance are free. A discounted membership is not automatic, and it is not free for everyone — the Y reviews each application on its own, and you may be asked to pay a portion of the fee. This site does not submit applications for you.
What Open Doors is
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio says it strives to provide programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, regardless of the ability to pay. To keep those programs available “FOR ALL,” it created the Open Doors Scholarship Program.
Open Doors is designed to provide families, children and adults with the financial assistance they may need to obtain quality Child Care, Youth Programs, and/or Health & Wellness services.
Funding for Open Doors comes from the Y Annual Support Campaign, plus grants from the United Way, the City of San Antonio and other foundations.
How awards work — read this part carefully
- Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to available resources.
- Applications are reviewed and awarded on an individual basis.
- Recipients may be asked to pay a portion of program fees.
- You must apply again every year. Rates return to standard pricing when a scholarship expires, unless a new scholarship is awarded.
- Tell the Y right away if your income or family size changes. The Y says false or incomplete information could put your financial assistance at risk.
That means the honest promise is this: you can apply for free, the Y will look at your real household picture, and if help is available you may pay less — sometimes much less — than the regular price.
What documents to bring
The Open Doors application lists the documentation required at the time of application. Gather what applies to your household before you go, so you do not have to make a second trip:
Household income — for all working adults in the household, provide one of these:
- One month of current pay stubs, or
- A tax return — the current year is required after April 15
Other documentation, if it applies to you:
- Proof of government funds, such as housing, Social Security, or disability
- Proof of child support payments
- Proof of all other income, such as contractual work or unemployment checks
- School schedule and ID, if you are a college student
- A copy of all tax return schedules, if you are self-employed
The form also asks for your household’s monthly income and monthly expenses, and for a list of everyone who regularly lives in your home.
How to apply, step by step
- Pick your branch. Applications are available at your local branch, and the Open Doors application can be downloaded from the YMCA website — see the link in the Helpful links section below.
- Fill out the Open Doors Scholarship Application for that branch or location. List every household member.
- Attach your documents from the list above — income for every working adult in the home, plus any government funds, child support, or other income.
- Turn it in at the branch Welcome Center and ask staff to confirm they have everything they need to review it.
- Wait for the individual review. If you are awarded help, ask when it expires and what portion, if any, you will pay — and put the yearly renewal date on your calendar.
Two San Antonio branches to start with
There are Y branches across San Antonio. These two are good starting points if you are not sure where to go — call first to confirm current hours and that they can take your Open Doors application:
- Davis-Scott Family YMCA — 1213 Iowa St, San Antonio, TX 78203 — 210-532-0932
- Westside Family YMCA — 2900 Ruiz St, San Antonio, TX 78228 — 210-433-6391
Not near either one? Use the YMCA of Greater San Antonio website linked below to find your closest branch, or dial 2-1-1 for a free referral.
Coming in 2027: the Hartman Family YMCA
The Y says the future Hartman Family YMCA is opening in early 2027 and memberships for it are not yet available. For that future branch, people with qualifying physical, intellectual, developmental, or special needs disabilities may be eligible for up to 100% waived membership support, and additional help may also be available through Open Doors. If that fits your family, the Y invites you to complete the interest form on its Hartman page — do not wait for it if you need help now; apply through a branch that is open today.
What a Y membership can open up for a family
A membership is more than a gym. Depending on the branch and the program, the Y offers fitness and wellness activities, swimming, youth programs, child care, and after-school and camp programs for kids. Open Doors help can be for membership, child care, youth programs, health and wellness services, or a mix — ask at your branch what your application should cover.
If cost is also tight in other parts of life, these guides may help too:
- Free meals for seniors in San Antonio — senior centers and home delivery for neighbors 60+
- Free summer meals for kids in San Antonio — what exists for children when school is out
- Free job training programs in San Antonio — training that can lead to better work
Not sure what else you may qualify for?
A family asking about the Y often may qualify for other help too — with food, child care, bills, or training costs. Our free Apply for Me review looks at your situation and points you to potential matches. We do not submit government applications or complete paperwork for you — we help you see what you may qualify for and where to apply.

Frequently asked questions
Is a YMCA membership in San Antonio really free through Open Doors?
Not automatically. Open Doors is a scholarship program. The Y reviews each application individually, awards are first-come, first-served and subject to available resources, and recipients may be asked to pay a portion of program fees. Applying is free, and some families pay much less than the regular price.
What can Open Doors help pay for?
The Y says Open Doors is designed to help families, children and adults get quality Child Care, Youth Programs, and/or Health & Wellness services — which includes membership. Ask your branch to review the services your family actually needs.
What documents do I need to apply?
For all working adults in the household, one month of current pay stubs or a tax return (current year required after April 15). Also bring, if they apply to you, proof of government funds, child support, other income such as unemployment or contract work, a school schedule and ID if you are a college student, and all tax return schedules if you are self-employed.
How long does an Open Doors scholarship last?
You must apply again every year. When a scholarship expires, rates return to standard pricing unless a new scholarship is awarded, so ask for your expiration date when you are approved and renew before it runs out.
